Implications and resources for practitioners

Fixing family bonds and ties is highly useful in relation to the families, which do practice caregiving to an elder in the family. There are programs, which can often aid this. The Extension Service designs such programs, which generate awareness about possible issues, being created in even the most relaxed of environments, such programs are reportedly innocuous and hardly invasive. One could also resort to workshops and printed notes which inform families about strain reduction in family ties, time management, general understanding of the inception and progress of old age, enhancing self values, etc. These are mostly useful causing significant interventions in such families.

The primary caregiver is the most stressed out person in the family. This is to be clearly understood by the other members. It is obvious that the physical exhaustion and the mental stress this person is bearing is only on the rise all the time and he/she desperately needs some kind of support. His/her sense of commitment should be generally appreciated and adorned. But that is not enough. There should be genuine efforts on the part of the other members to share his/her workload and come to his /her aid in way of mental support or even extending direct physical help. Relaxation techniques come in handy and can often do enough to help the caregiver. Such sharing is effectively caring for the older member and the caregiver simultaneously.

Often families resort to therapeutic techniques to tide over stress resulting out of caregiving. Often this could concern mainly the adult child caregiver and his/her partner facing therapy more intensively than the others as their relationship often suffers most in the course of the difficult life they lead. Each member of the family can also be encouraged to undergo therapy, as the effect of such practices is comprehensive, including the children. Therapy often works towards the most effective sharing of duties between the family members in course of caregiving. Thus this could be an effective way of tiding over all the hardships, which accompany caregiving making life a little smoother.
